You do know this much: as a consumer you seek to purchase items from companies whose products bear that little tree. What exactly does this little tree logo with the acronym FSC beside it actually entail?
What is FSC?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international not-for-profit organization which was established in 1993 in response to growing concerns over globalized deforestation. The FSC is represented throughout the globe in more than fifty countries.
“FSC provides internationally recognized standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organizations, and communities interested in responsible forestry.” [2
What is the goal of FSC?
The goal is to encourage worldwide responsible forestry management.
How is this goal achieved?
Why is this necessary?
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization states that half of the globe’s forests have, to this day, been changed, degraded, destroyed or transformed into other land uses. Many of the enduring forests are illegally exploited and succumb to poor forestry management
What is FSC controlled wood?
The FSC has defined forestry management principles and criteria which are respected by the FSC-Forests throughout the world. These rules cover everything from legal issues and indigenous rights to labour rights and environmental impacts of forest management.
So, essentially, this little tree logo allows consumers worldwide to select products from socially and environmentally responsible forests. The next time you are in the market for wooden furniture or furniture chair manufacturers, keep an eye out for the FSC logo; you’ll not only be helping the environment, you will be encouraging responsible companies, such as USA furniture manufacturer, Newport Furniture Parts, who are committed to being FSC Certified.
